Ternary (Triangular) Graph Paper

For plotting three-part compositions — the gap other graph-paper sites don't cover.

Ternary paper is an equilateral triangle subdivided by three families of parallel lines, used to plot compositions made of exactly three parts that always sum to 100% — a mixture's proportions, not independent x/y/z values. It's a genuinely specialized tool, and one that most printable graph paper sites simply don't offer.

Sediment or mineral composition classification, where a sample is described by the relative proportions of three components.

Anywhere you're describing something as a percentage split across exactly three categories that must add to 100%.

When you print, set your print dialog to 100% / Actual Size— not "Fit to Page." Fit-to-page silently rescales the grid, which is the most common reason printed graph paper measures wrong. Every PDF also includes a printed 1-inch reference line you can check with a ruler.

Questions

Why can't I just use a regular x/y grid for this?

Because the three values aren't independent — they're constrained to always sum to 100%. A triangular grid encodes that constraint directly; a square grid would let you plot invalid combinations.

How many divisions does the grid have?

Our default is 10 divisions per side, giving you 10% increments — fine enough for most compositional plotting without overcrowding the page.
